Dr.    André Burger

Dr. Burger was born and schooled in King William’s Town, South Africa. He completed his undergraduate studies in Medicine at the University of the Orange Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBCHB) degree in the year 2000.

He subsequently completed his Internship at Edendale Hospital, Pietermaritzburg, and his community service year at Addington hospital, Durban. During this period, he obtained the Diploma in Emergency care as well as the Flight medical attendant certificate.

He then joined the Ophthalmology department in East London, South Africa. In 2004, Dr. Burger went on to specialize in Ophthalmology at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, Durban, and in 2008 he became a member of the Fellowship of the College of Ophthalmologists (SA). During this period, he also completed the Diploma in Ophthalmology.

Following this, he left for the United Kingdom to further his studies. In 2009, he obtained a one-year Oculoplastic fellowship from the West of England eye unit at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

In 2010, he obtained the Certificate of Eligibility for Registration as an Ophthalmologist in the United Kingdom through the Post Medical Training and Education Board.

In 2011, he obtained a one-year Vitreo-retinal surgery fellowship, whilst working at the West of England Eye unit, at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. Following this, he worked as an Oculoplastic consultant for 1 year in the Queen Alexandria hospital, Portsmouth, United Kingdom.

He then returned to Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, and has since worked as an Ophthalmology specialist in the Private sector, as well as being a part time Ophthalmology consultant at Greys and Edendale Hospitals.

Dr. Burger is actively involved in teaching young and aspiring ophthalmologists and regularly attends national as well as international congresses. He has recently co-authored on an Ophthalmology book which is about to be distributed around the world.

He loves people and is very passionate about Ophthalmology. He currently resides in Pietermaritzburg with his family.
